Jason Bay - NY Mets Missing Piece?

Jason Bay has bucked the NY Mets rumors and has passed his physical examination. He'll join Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado and David Wright in the middle of the NY Mets lineup.

My initial reaction to this signing is 50-50 good and bad. Let's face it, the NY Mets Offense last year sucked. But you cannot discount the amount of games our starters missed due to injury. At one point, the only bat in our lineup that was actually able to produce was David Wrights.

So what happened? Omar Minaya noticed that NY Mets Offensive production statistics were terrible. He immediately made that his #1 priority in the off-season, to remedy the Mets Offense.

The problem however, wasn't that the Mets had a terrible Offense, it was that behind Johan, the Mets couldn't stop anybody on defense.

I like to see the long ball as much as the next guy, but you can't win in the National League without having a formidable defense and pitching staff to keep opposing teams under control. Offenses have off nights, and without the proper pitching and defense to keep you in a ball game, you're a .500 team at best.

Jason Bay, welcome to NY. According to the NY Mets 2009 stats, you're exactly what we need - offensive production. Let's hope you're all we need
