Sweeping Clean
As the Mets continue to falter and stumble through the 2008 season another lesson is again painfully swept across the face of the club from Queens, by none other than the constant instructor that is the Bobby Cox regime.
Mike Pelfrey’s “inspired” performance (in defense of his embattled leader and teammates) showed as bright as the next couple of weeks look for the team and its fan base.
The Braves domination of The Mets exposed every weakness and problem throughout the whole structure of the New York Mets, blowing beyond on field performance and effort, reaching through the club house, all the way to the essence of the teams very existence. Yearly, the tomahawks bring in new home bred talent, guys who grow up and stay in the organization. They find a comfortable and enjoyable, goal oriented system that teaches them about the advantage to a hitter in a 2-0 count, the value of a first pitch strike, or not walking the leadoff hitter. They grow up in the system, reach their full potential and are then dealt away graciously, with the ability to still sign a big contract, or contain value on the market.
The other is a team with no identity, a mix of faded glory and flashes of future stardom. A team that can’t pick one another up, a team that struggles with its discipline at the plate, a team that won’t take on the responsibility that comes with wearing the orange N/Y across their head. Part of the commitment that comes with living, playing, coaching…do whatever it is that you do in New York City, is to deal with being in New York. It is the capital of the world and added pressure comes with representing that city. Maybe these players are better suited for a small market where leaving the locker room is acceptable, where hitting .100 points below career average is ok as long as you are a nice guy. Whatever the problem is the future still seems to be plagued with it, and answers appear few and far between.
The Mets have one last chance to salvage some respect and look competitive against their “Daddies” from Atlanta, but this fan is expecting anything less the Mets providing a broom and doing themselves in once again.
