Ben Sheets & NY Mets, No Thanks!

The NY Mets know that they could use a quality starting pitcher to lock down their rotation. Ben Sheets and the NY Mets are somewhat a logical fit. But the rumor that the Mets could sign Ben Sheets is just that, a rumor.

Sheets, who turns 32 in mid July, has undeniable talent on the mound. The Mets, looking for a solid number two guy behind Johan Santana, dropped the ball on Derek Lowe, and don't want to do that again. It's no rumor that Ben Sheets isn't Derek Lowe, but Sheets isn't the guy the Mets need for the long term.

Sheets has averaged only 150.2 innings per season since 2005. In addition, Sheets has yet to throw an inning in 2009. After Ben Sheets' elbow surgery in February, he'll still require time in rehab to get back to his old self.

The Mets don't need a guy to sit on the IR for 4 months a season, and then throw a mid 3's ERA out there. If they did, they would have signed Pedro Martinez for the rest of his career.

The rumor of the Mets going after Ben Sheets may come true in a short term contract though. If the Mets sign Sheets for a playoff run, they may actually be using their noggin and satisfy a few of us Mets fans.
