Perez is a whack job
Oliver Perez might benefit more from psychiatric help then Rick Peterson's guidance. I can look past the whole "jump over the chalk lines" on the way into and out of the field. I don't mind having players who are superstitious, if it consitently provides upside to their performance. Perez was a stud in 2004, striking out 239 hitters. His fastball had pop, his change up was filthy, and his curve ball was knee buckling.
After that stellar year, Pittsburgh collectively checked themselves for wet pants at the prospect of having this talented lefty anchoring their staff, atleast until his contract expired, which undoubtedly would force them to pay money to keep him, instead of the peanuts they're used to paying. So what does the whacko do? he posts ERA's of 5.85, and 6.63 in his next 35 starts for the Priates.
Enter the always optomistic NY Mets. Pick up a guy with a world of talent, the brain focus of a 3 year old, and the jury's still out on his dedication to win. Occasionally he'll throw gems, he'll look dominant, and occasionally he'll throw 90mph batting practice to MLB hitters. Sheer disaster.
You'd think with a payroll near 200 Million that the Mets would employ some sort of team mental doctor to deal with these fragile athletes. Lets hope Peterson and Willie wrangle this kid back to earth and focus him on winning some ball games.
