Martinez getting nastier

Pedro Martinez tossed 4 scoreless innings against the Tigers at Tradition field on Sunday. Striking out 4 batters, spreading out 4 hits and a walk, Pedro pitched like Pedro, and the Mets found a way to hold on for a 7 to 4 victory. After the game Pedro stated,

"I don't know about anybody else, but I'm happy facing some real hitters and getting [this first appearance] out of the way… I was good enough”.

After a spring filled with questions and uncertainty, Pedro knows that he’ll need to get some time on the mound facing real batters in game time situations before he can label himself opening day ready.

He is scheduled to throw again two more times before spring training breaks. While most starting pitchers throw 25 innings before opening day, Pedro will most likely break camp topping out at 17-24 innings. Because of his experience little concern should be had for Pedro’s ability to determine his level of fitness. It’s been a long rehab for Pedro and getting himself back up to 100% health should be his prime concern.

A promising note emerged against the Tigers on Sunday. Pedro threw his fastball in the high 80’s and even topped out around 90 mph. This is very promising as velocity will generally trend upwards once camp breaks, and mid season rolls along. For two seasons Pedro struggled to find that velocity, and subsequently was forced to rely on his curve and change up to get hitters out. While his disgusting curve ball makes batters flinch, and the changeup is filthy, Pedro with a low 90’s fastball is even scarier to opposing hitters.

Overall the success of the Mets could ultimately come down to their starting pitching. While everyone and their uncle expect Santana to be dominating, the remaining members of the pitching staff will surely need to shoulder the rest of the load. Pedro Martinez is in a contract year, and starting to look more like the 3 time cy young award winner he is. With the added motivation of a new contract, his tenacity to prove he’s “still got it”, and his sheer dominance as a pitcher, Pedro is set to have a pretty big year in 2008.
